| Spearfishing in Peru with Alfonso Chavez |
|
Alfonso has been spearfishing since he was 13 with Jorge and Javier Chavez his father and uncle who were his mentors in this game, they used to travel along the Peruvian coast spearfishing which left a lifetime memories that built his passion for the sport. Alfonso was raised as a very selective spear fisherman, always looking more for quality than quantity and enjoying the whole experience including sitting at the table to eat their hunt. In his early 20’s Alfonso started to spear in the north of Peru with a local family of Divers, “Los Mimbela” and with the head of the Brothers Angel Mimbela, an exceptional spear fisherman and friend that showed him the best spots and techniques to hunt in a different way and jump from the 10kg fishes of the south to the top 20kg tropical fish, specially the challenging “Mero Murique”(Broomtail Grouper). Since then he has stayed spearfishing there, from Cabo Blanco to Ecuador, searching for big Muriques and Fortunos. Unfortunately due to lack of control the area is overfished and you need to go far from shore to spots beyond 25miles to find some good fish. Being very near to the border of Ecuador, Alfonso gets to spend some time there and also travels to Central America where you can find very nice spots with exceptional reefs with top 20kg fish. If he had to choose one place for spearfishing it will always be the North of Peru, looking for “Muriques” near his beachhouse, with family and friends waiting for their catch to enjoy a tasty Peruvian Ceviche.
